Viola odorata contains :Phenolic glycosides, gaultherin, violutoside (salicylic acid methyl ester) . Saponins : Myrosin and violin . Flavonoids : rutin and violarutin . Miscellaneous : odoratine, 2-nitropropionic acid , mucilage. Cyclized proteins (Cyclotide, Cycloviolacin O2)
Viola odorata is reported to be a very effective remedy for the treatment of some types of cancers. The aboriginal tribes of India are reported to have been using the plant for the complete cure of cancer among their people for a long time . Cyclotides in viola odorata are plant proteins with exceptional structural stability, due to their cysteine knot motif and cyclic peptide backbone. Cycloviolacin O2 (CyO2), a cyclotide from viola odorata has anti – tumor effects and causes cell death by membrane permeabilization (1) .Anticancer effect of isolated cyclotide cycloviolacin O2 from viola odorata has been studied, cyclotides belong to the largest family of naturally cyclized proteins with potent cytotoxic activity . In an experimental study, it has been shown that the plant extract causes disintegration of cell membranes of exposed human Lymphoma cell lines(2) . Cyclotides have exhibited strong dose – dependent cytoyoxic activities with their chemical and biologic stalibity , they present a potential pharmacologic tool as antitumor agents.It has been shown that cyclotides with robust cytotoxicty may be promising chemosensitizing agents against drug resistant breast cancer.(2) Cyclotides disrupt the bilayer of lipid membranes and form multimeric pores with channel – like activities which allow for increased intracellular accumulation of doxorubicin in drug resistant breast cancer cells(2) .
